DAWES IN CONCERT:

Folk-rockers Dawes have picked up the mantle laid down by elite rock and roll storytellers like Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Frontman Taylor Goldsmith forges his own legend with his powerful vocals, poetic lyrics, and passionate songwriting. The rest of the band fleshes out his masterpieces, starting with the propulsive drumming and falsetto backing vocals of brother Griffin Goldsmith. Tay Strathairn throws in elegiac keyboard flourishes, while bassist Wylie Gerber drops in smooth melodies on the low end. Ticket buyers will love the nods to classic rock, country, and folk, even as Dawes brings their own contemporary flare to stages across North America.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The roots of Los Angeles folk-rockers Dawes lie in the post-punk band Simon Dawes, the high school project of vocalists/guitarists Taylor Goldsmith and Blake Mills. The group grew to include Wylie Gelber on bass and Taylor’s brother Griffin on drums, though Mills left shortly after their 2006 debut Carnivore. As the sole voice and songwriter in the band, Goldsmith regrouped and added keyboardist Alex Casnoff. Rechristened as Dawes, the group began to explore a more folk-oriented sound with their 2009 debut North Hills, which was praised by critics for its unique and refreshing blend of familiar folk elements. The band made their national television debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson the following year before kicking off a co-headlining tour with Blitzen Trapper. Before the release of their 2013 album Stories Don’t End, Tay Strathairn replaced Casnoff on keys and added an even more dynamic sound to the group’s roster. In 2015 Dawes issued their fourth album All Your Favorite Bands, an acclaimed release that has cemented Dawes as a group to watch for both their stellar recorded output and their passionate live performances.

  • A terrific show

by GBfromNY on 4/15/25Beacon Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I was fortunate enough to see Dawes perform two shows at different venues in the same week and both were terrific. What was really great is how they adapted to the audience with a more relaxed (but still rocking vibe) at the first and harder at the second. At both shows they performed for around two hours and there was minimal overlap between the two set lists. Audience engagement was tight and sincere at both shows and both offered a variety of configurations - full band, Taylor & Griff duo and Taylor solo. The set lists were intelligently structured and superbly delivered.

I felt like the band was in a hurry to leave. Played too many songs with LA theme and from the latest album. Should have played more of the older tunes. Lead singer butchered the lyrics on A Little Bit of Everything. Good jams, however.

We never miss an opportunity to attend a Dawes performance at the Fillmore. They always deliver a great show and the songs and fellow fans fill our hearts with love and understanding. The concert vibe is mildly reminiscent of Grateful Dead shows.

  • One of the best shows in 2024

by Captin on 12/9/24The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

So glad live music is back. Dawes is easily in my top two shows of 2024. Right up there with Rise Against. And both those shows Were a shared experience with my 24 year old son who share a common interest in attending concerts. We don’t share the same tastes in music and that’s how it should be. I do believe he left the Dawes performance as a new fan of Dawes. I have always been. Connecting with my son through live music is a beautiful thing

  • Dawes amazing in great venue

by Jim on 11/19/24The Salt Shed Indoors (Shed) - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Taylor solo(Grand Rapids) and Dawes outdoors at Evanston golf course previously. Dawes put on great full show at the Salt Shed and the venue was amazing.

  • Great band, not a great room

by Love me some Dawes on 11/19/24The Salt Shed Indoors (Shed) - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

5th time seeing Dawes. They were great, as usual. Lead singer started getting a bug just before the show and was beginning to get some voice issues. He asked the crowd to step up more. Dawes is really skilled at building a communal vibe out of every audience, so this should have made it even better. Much of the audience gave back and Taylor did an admirable job pushing through and overcoming his vocal issues. He even took on an intimate song with just him alone onstage with an acoustic guitar. (A Little Bit of Everything). The problem was the venue. The Salt Shed is a massive open space with limited seating way at the back. It's a new venue and is Chicago's see and be seen venue right now. Admittedly, we ended up in a tough crowd spot with a few real drunk groups who were more interested in talking to each other and barely knew the show was going on. No paying attention to what the band was laying down, cheering only on the cue of the crowd's applause. It outright ruined the emotional centerpiece of the show with the crowd filling in the quiet of Taylor's acoustic masterpiece with their own babbling. Could we have moved? Yes. But the problem seemed to exist throughout the crowd. This was the most tepid response from an audience I have ever seen for Dawes and that's why. They are a band that draws the audience in and then gives back to the crowd 5-fold to create magic night-by-night. Unfortunately, too many in the crowd seemed to be there to say they were at The Salt Shed, instead of being there to hear Dawes. What had all the makings and opportunity for a show of the year kind of night, carelessly sloshed away.

  • What a venue! What a great live band.

by Dave on 11/19/24The Salt Shed Indoors (Shed) - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first highly anticipated show at the Salt Shed. I absolutely loved the venue from the drink selection to the food to the atmosphere and the design. I have been a big fan of Dawes for many years, but I’ve never had a chance to see them. So happily, I finally did! Taylor’s voice was out for the night, but he made up for it and still sounded great! I swear he put a little extra energy behind his guitar work to make up for it and boy, did it shine. The rest of the band was absolutely killer as well and that rhythm guitar player really surprised me.

  • Another Stellar Show

by Bob on 11/18/24Taft Theatre - CincinnatiRating: 5 out of 5

My 4th time to see DAWES at The Taft Theater in Cincinnati (5th overall) and each time they take it to a new level. With a new bassist, keyboardist and percussionist, the stage presentation seemed more subdued, but not in a bad way. To me, they were a tight unit, the proverbial well-oiled machine who displayed incredible musicianship in a no-nonsense manner. The nice thing about their concerts at the Taft is that the vast majority of fans are there to listen and not talk through the show. We were sitting in the balcony box seats because fans end up standing in the lower-level seating area in front of the stage. Can't blame them, being that close and being drawn in to the show, but I prefer being able to hear among folks with the same intentions. The volume was loud but not overbearing, and just "warm"enough to really feel the groove. I left the show with a full heart that comes from hearing a magical, inspirational performance and a longing for the next time they tour in my area. Well, well done!!!

  • fun night :)

went for the the opener, Winnetka Bowling League, but Dawes was great! the venue was a beautiful, intricate, traditional theatre and provided a unique atmosphere for a rock concert. audience energy was mid at the beginning…but we got em grooving!

Always fabulous performances from this great group! I’ve seen them many times and even in this small not sold out venue they gave a great performance. Loved the new material and can’t wait to hear entire new album. Taylor is a marvelous singer songwriter who constantly inspires me to keep writing my own songs. I hope to see them again soon!! May they stay together!!!

  • Another fine performance

by Good music fan on 3/26/24Ace of Spades - SacramentoRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic show tonight! Taylor and brother Griffin were spectacular as usual. I was a bit concerned know they had lost two members, bass and keys, but the new members were terrific and filled in admirably. Also, Lucius provide great harmonies on Dawes songs, and they played awesome songs as well. Now a Lucius fan too. What's more, the band played some lesser songs, perhaps ones that would benefit from the added female harmony of Lucius. Missed songs like, Somewhere along the Way, Things Happen, We're All Gonna Die, and A Little Bit of Everything to name a few. I loved the opening and closer being cover songs. That Floyd, Sine on You Crazy Diamond song really popped, drums came in perfectly, and the end song of Cocker version of With A Little Help from my friends was life affirming. I can't wait to see if/when Taylor and Griffin get new members and the next album. Hopefully won't be too long. I actually purchase CD and vinyl of all their albums, not a bad record in the lot.
