DAWES IN CONCERT:
Folk-rockers Dawes have picked up the mantle laid down by elite rock and roll storytellers like Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Frontman Taylor Goldsmith forges his own legend with his powerful vocals, poetic lyrics, and passionate songwriting. The rest of the band fleshes out his masterpieces, starting with the propulsive drumming and falsetto backing vocals of brother Griffin Goldsmith. Tay Strathairn throws in elegiac keyboard flourishes, while bassist Wylie Gerber drops in smooth melodies on the low end. Ticket buyers will love the nods to classic rock, country, and folk, even as Dawes brings their own contemporary flare to stages across North America.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
The roots of Los Angeles folk-rockers Dawes lie in the post-punk band Simon Dawes, the high school project of vocalists/guitarists Taylor Goldsmith and Blake Mills. The group grew to include Wylie Gelber on bass and Taylor’s brother Griffin on drums, though Mills left shortly after their 2006 debut Carnivore. As the sole voice and songwriter in the band, Goldsmith regrouped and added keyboardist Alex Casnoff. Rechristened as Dawes, the group began to explore a more folk-oriented sound with their 2009 debut North Hills, which was praised by critics for its unique and refreshing blend of familiar folk elements. The band made their national television debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson the following year before kicking off a co-headlining tour with Blitzen Trapper. Before the release of their 2013 album Stories Don’t End, Tay Strathairn replaced Casnoff on keys and added an even more dynamic sound to the group’s roster. In 2015 Dawes issued their fourth album All Your Favorite Bands, an acclaimed release that has cemented Dawes as a group to watch for both their stellar recorded output and their passionate live performances.
Definitely great seeing these guys live. Highly recommended.
Such a great performance- Dawes music is awesome. Always look for them touring thru Wisconsin
The venue got us in fast, it wasn't over crowded and the band was FANTASTIC as always. The sounds was good. Would definitely go back.
Loved this show with Michigander and Dawes! Was in the third row and enjoyed the show!
My first time seeing them and my first impression was how fantastic the whole band sounded and I was surprised at the drummers voice and how great the vocals were and how strong. It was a great show and very interactive between the crowd and band which could be felt and heard. I love live music Thank you Dawes
Easily accessible location, uncomplicated check-in and a fantastic concert
The music was outstanding musicians were all in tune crowd was diverse which is great
As always, Dawes is supremely talented- great song writing, great instrumental interplay, tremendous audience engagement. Love this band!
Dawes get increasingly better each time I see them. This is my fourth show. Leader, Taylor Goldsmith, chose a great selection of songs from their extensive catalog and the band played each one with energy and enthusiasm from the first note to the last. The vocal harmonies were robust and spot on. Backed by Griffin's impressive drumming, the band was flawless. Trevor's guitar solo in the song "Window Seat"was phenomenal. Dawes now features a new bassist and keyboard player. Although both are exceptional musicians, I miss the animation of the previous bass player. The new member was solid, but stood motionless throughout the concert. The new keyboardist looked like a mad scientist and for my taste was a bit too eccentric and busy. Some of the electronics didn't seem to fit the music at times. Nevertheless, Dawes certainly gave us our money's worth by putting on an outstanding show. With so much awful music on the scene, I am surprised and disappointed they are not huge by now. The songwriting is brilliant, intelligent, and moving. Taylor is a personable front man with strong vocal ability and dynamic guitar skills. His band is one of the best supporting bands in the business, ranking right up there with the best of them. As much as I love their recorded works, seeing them live takes the music to another level. Go see them. You will not be disappointed!
I was fortunate enough to see Dawes perform two shows at different venues in the same week and both were terrific. What was really great is how they adapted to the audience with a more relaxed (but still rocking vibe) at the first and harder at the second. At both shows they performed for around two hours and there was minimal overlap between the two set lists. Audience engagement was tight and sincere at both shows and both offered a variety of configurations - full band, Taylor & Griff duo and Taylor solo. The set lists were intelligently structured and superbly delivered.
